When You Set Your Morning Alarm For 2:20am!!
Working in a very "people centred” business gives us the opportunity to speak to customers on all manners of topics on a daily basis. We love building relationships with our customers and becoming a part of folks’ daily rituals.
One of the most surprising elements of our conversations with customers is the readiness for them to chat about either their own or a friend or family member’s struggles with mental health. Surprising in that 1) they are open to conversing about this previously “taboo” subject and 2) the sheer scale of the problem. I myself suffered from anxiety as a child and had a very severe episode of anxiety and depression for over a year in my early 20’s when I was prescribed anti-depressants. Working in a job I didn’t feel fulfilment, partying to escape at the weekend, living on a poor diet and constant city life one-upmanship leads to pretty poor outcomes. Unfortunately these patterns of daily life, driven by the media, and now supercharged by social media, haven’t changed.
On the back of this, we had always wanted to do something to support a mental health charity, so when we heard about Darkness Into Life, our coffee and charity minds came together! Alarms were set for 2:20am and we set up the cafe to caffeinate those who did the same, with all proceeds of tea and coffee sales to be given to Pieta House.
There was an amazing bonding community feeling that’s hard to describe. No doubt it was difficult for those who have been particularly touched by mental health issues, including those who have lost loved ones, but I’m sure the sheer turn out gave hope to those who are going through mental health problems and support for relatives of those affected.
We will announce the final total in the next few days as we are hoping to get matching funding from a previous employer. With a bit of luck the grand total will be over €1,000.
Many thanks to our staff who gave up their tips for the day and for Elaine and Niamh for getting up super early!
